It was an adequate-but-insufficient-in-general idea.  As I recall
observing at the time.

Insufficient since there's actually no limit to the amount of
information that might be needed to fully process a given hotplug
event, and since most of that information wasn't needed only at
hotplug time either.  Ergo my comment that making sysfs do
the right thing is a better approach...
