Yeah, 2.6 based systems can't yet integrate some rather essential
custom driver stacks.

Depends.  The USB stack has been significantly updated in terms
of robustness and correctness since then.  It's really hard to
get support for those parts of 2.4.20 any more, and I know that
folk putting out embedded products have frustrations there.
