That's the way I usually look at it with PDAs and such, but ...

... then there's also your average Ethernet link, where "connected"
refers to the link on the other side of USB.  Unplug that cable,
link is down.  Unplug ADSL link ... very similar.  Ditto a cable
modem using CDC Ethernet.  All those usually involve an "interrupt"
transfer (polled by the USB host) for a link status notification.
