Well even the stock vanilla kernels throw stuff away in the line discipline if the port driver tries to handle too much received data at once. Of course something has to give, but it would be nice if the port's 'throttle' routine got called _before_ the line discipline started throwing stuff away! (The ftdi_sio driver in 2.6.12 has a workaround that checks if the port is about to be throttled.)
