I replaced the cable between the HD case and the usb port with the cable that 
came with my Canon camera. It seems like that did the trick - the HD was 
recognized instantly. I did no further testing but this one looks very good 
so far...

I don't think that there are more recent PPC-benh kernels than 2.6.11 yet, so 
upgrading is not an option. Seems that the cable is to blame... Good to know
