The same usb key works fine on my laptop (2.6.15-rc4 too) and on a ppc64 system (but the ppc64 system has a much older kernel). The laptop doesn't use the ohci driver. It could be an hardware problem too? One more detail, reads work fine (cp /dev/sda /dev/null does too), only writes fail like this.
