Coincidentally, Len Brown is experiencing exactly the same sort of error, but with ehci-hcd instead. See http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-usb-devel&m=113521633114762&w=2 Anyway, are you sure that your UPS's USB interface works at all? Have you tried plugging it in to other computers? Have you tried replacing the USB cable? (That's grasping at straws -- if the interface didn't work at all you'd be getting a different sort of error.) I wonder if that could be contributing to the problems... although one wouldn't expect two independent drivers to fail in exactly the same way.
