Both ub and usb-storage revalidate on open (the latter does it if
removable flag is set in the MODE SENSE reply). This includes re-reading
the capacity. I suppose it's close to what XP does. In Fedora, for example,
HAL polls the device periodically, and works "eventually" in such cases.
