You should try doing the other test, where you use usb-storage for disk 
I/O but don't do the actual video transfers.

Certainly it is possible.  Some chips are more robust than others; the 
not-so-good ones need to be reset from time to time.  Provided the resets 
don't occur too frequently and don't interfere very much with the flow of 
data to/from the disk, they shouldn't matter.
