Take it easy.  I only said this was the best way to test -- I didn't say 
it was the best way to fix the problems.

Yes, it should be possible to add debugging code to localize the problem.  
That will be much harder and will take longer.

For one thing, it might allow us to rule out the chipset as the cause of 
your problems.
