I've been trying to debug this adapter, as well.

So far I've found out that if you run:
usbmodules --device /proc/bus/usb/###/###

(after you've plugged it in, of course) then it'll start to work.

according to man usbmodules, this is only supposed to list which
modules can be used for this device, so why it has this (useful) side
effect, I have no clue.

It would be nice to automate this.

Write back if it also worked for you.
