Someone in the usb forum pointed me to microchip and ftdi. I emailed ftdi and provided the few information they want to know (my name, my company (i wrote "open source spare time project"), country and email). And less than 10 hours later i got a reply with a set of 8 pids for me to use in my projects :-) I really think as long is there are offers like this, there's really no reason to spoil the concept of the unique vendor and device ids by just grabbing one.
