When just mounting a filesystem, you usually don't even recognize the missing last sector, but vol_id (from udev package) explicitly checks the last sector, and the syslog fills up with I/O error messages... The FIX_CAPACITY patch definitively cured that effect.
Any device for which only some hosts apply this patch cannot reliably report across all hosts that the last block of the card exists and the next block does not ...
