With CardBus USB controllers, be sure that you plug in the
external power supply.  When the VBUS power supply is too
weak -- e.g. powered only from the PCMCIA connector -- it's
common that high speed devices don't work right.  (And no,
I don't know why that seems to happen more with high speed
than full speed.)

For reasons unclear to me, those combo USB/firwire cards
have frequently failed.
