Can you provide more information? For instance, a kernel stack trace (Alt-SysRq-T) when lsusb is hung. For best results, go into single-user mode first. I have no idea why the device should work when it is behind a hub but not when it is plugged directly into the computer. Can you try plugging the device into a different computer?
