Why the huge pause, anyway?  I find myself getting impatient when Windows takes 
a
second or so to initialize a device, and the single most annoying thing about my
iPod Shuffle is that it has a self-imposed 1-second delay before it shows up on
USB.

I know that this delay can be tweaked, and that I'm somewhat impatient; but
this seems like an odd default, giving people a "slow and unresponsive"
first impression of usb-storage, and more so if it causes new problems on
other hardware.  Could the delay be isolated to the devices that need it?
