An external hub would certainly be a good idea, although there's
also the possibility that the PDA _could_ source 500 mA for a short
while before its battery gets drained.

What's the entire power drain for the whole PDA?  I'd have guessed
a lot less than 500 mA myself, especially with backlight off.
