That is not at all typical of the Genesys Logic devices. Their tendency is to break when running too fast, and USB 1.1 ports don't seem to drive them fast enough for that to happen. Besides, usb-storage includes a time delay just to prevent these problems. Can you post a debugging log from your computer in which you try to use the drive after doing "rmmod ehci-hcd"? Without the ehci-hcd driver loaded, the system will fall back to the UHCI controller.
