Hi again, I tried moving the "good" kernel, 2.6.11, to the new Mepis. I moved it, the initrd and all its drivers. I must have missed one or more essential items. It runs to the extent that the new Mepis works and brings up KDE completely, BUT it won't recognize the Xircom as it does with Kanoppix and the output from "dmesg" is very different between 2.6.11 running in Kanoppix and in Mepis.
The good news, I discovered mii-tools and am able to set the built-in via rhine lan to 10BaseT. My adsl service ONLY works if the lan card is in half duplex mode. I don't think I'll go farther with recompiling the kernel. Since I can't get the old 2.6.11 moved completely and running I suspect that "my" recompile probably wouldn't solve the problem. I did learn that the break is exactly between kernels 2.6.11 and .12. I see that substantial changes are expected in 2.6.20 with respect to the USB. Maybe there's hope there. In searching the Internet for: "can't set config #1, error-32" I get quite a few hits. This is an error I get with 2.6.12, as well as "error-71". Other folks are having the same problem with their USB at around the same kernel change over.
