Hey all,

When trying CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND with my Dell Latitude D820, I found that
the SGS Thomson Micro fingerprint reader (the same as found in
Thinkpads, http://thinkfinger.sourceforge.net/) is rendered inoperable.
When I attempt to prove the device (e.g. with lsusb), the device
connects to the bus, the kernel discovers it, only to encounter a hub
port error (-71) and disable it. This will continue every time I run
lsusb, although occasionally I will catch the device in the right stage
of the failure, allowing me to see the device in lsusb for a short
period of time each cycle, yielding the following lsusb entry:

Bus 003 Device 042: ID 0483:2016 SGS Thomson Microelectronics
  Fingerprint Reader

Each cycle, the device has a different device ID. Additionally, if I run
lsusb --verbose, I get the following errors:

cannot read device status, Protocol error (71)
can't get hub descriptor: Protocol error
cannot read device status, Protocol error (71)
Accompanied by the following errors in dmesg:
usb 3-1.2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd lsusb rqt 128 rq 6 len
255 ret -71
usb 3-1.2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd lsusb rqt 128 rq 6 len
255 ret -71
usb 3-1.2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd lsusb rqt 128 rq 0 len 2
ret -71
usb 3-1: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd lsusb rqt 160 rq 6 len 13
ret -71
usb 3-1: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd lsusb rqt 128 rq 0 len 2
ret -71
hub 3-0:1.0: port 1 disabled by hub (EMI?), re-enabling...

While the device is occassionally visible in lsusb (although never with
--verbose AFAICT), it is never in operable enough a state long enough
for the driver to use it. The device works fine when CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND
is disabled. The output of dmesg is given below.

This message
(http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.thinkfinger/362) seems to
suggest at least some others are succesfully using the device with
suspend although I don't know that for a fact. I am presently running
kernel 2.6.21 although this same failure has been exhibited in earlier
kernels (at least 2.6.20) in the past.

Anyone have any ideas as to what might cause this failure? Is it the
device? The hub? The kernel USB subsystem? If any more information is
necessary to diagnose this failure, I'd be more than happy to provide
it. Anyways, thanks a ton,

- Ben Gamari
