Hi Everyone,

I've finally received my Epson Perfection 1640SU scanner. I am running Red
Hat Linux 7.0 and it seems to have some semblance of in-built scanner support
- it even has XSane and XScanimage preinstalled, although it has kernel
2.2.16-22. It claims to have a 2.4 USB backport.

When I typed 'modprobe scanner', it did not return any messages.
'lsmod' showed the following:
....
usb-uhci 19052 0 (unused)
scanner 4664 0 (unused)
usbcore 42088 1 [usb-uhci scanner]

When I list /proc/bus/usb/devices, it shows:
.....
P: Vendor=04b8 ProdID=010a Rev= 1.04
S: Manufacturer=EPSON
S: Product=Perfection1640
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=40 MxPwr= 2mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=(none)

(i.e it has no driver. In AE Lawrence's notes, it should be 'usbscanner').

Listing /proc/bus/usb/drivers shows:

48- 63: usbscanner
         hub
         usbdevfs

/var/log/messages also shows the following messages..... (snipped)

Mar 7 19:07:13 localhost kernel: scanner.c: open_scanner(0): Unable to
access minor data

Does anyone know what I've done wrong, or should I attempt to download kernel
2.2.18 and compile that? I'm a newbie so please bear with me....

Thanks a lot for any pointers.

Jin
PS -- I tried the 'usbview' program and it seems to detect the scanner
correctly:
