If you're using a 2.4.1 or later kernel, you ought to be OK.
Presumably you did make sure your RH-7 kernel compile
was done using "kgcc" ... that's very important.  You might
have some USB-related BIOS options set wrong though.

If there are problems in usb-ohci, I don't think they'd have those
particular symptoms.  I've used the NEC OHCI on a Toshiba
laptop with pretty good success on most 2.3.* and 2.4.* kernels,
with no such problems.  Including just now with a 2.4.3 kernel.
