If you're using a 2.4.1 or later kernel, you ought to be OK. Presumably you did make sure your RH-7 kernel compile was done using "kgcc" ... that's very important. I've used the NEC OHCI on a Toshiba laptop with pretty good success on most 2.3.* and 2.4.* kernels, with no such problems.
