I dont know aboutyour mouse problem my omniview 4-port hasnt died in the
couple of hours I had had it working..

It does take a few seconds to recover (both on linux and the mac) but I
think that is because of the hotplug  scripts are set to run every 10
seconds to probe.

The only real advice I can give you is ctrl-alt-backspace will quit the
X-server and i think its alt-shift-F2 will pop up a terminal window in X.
