Hello,

I'm trying to get the Canon PowerShot G1 camera to work with Linux via USB.
Installed libusb-0.1.3b and gphoto-2.0beta1 (built from source), the
device is detected, but trying to do anything (like gphoto2 --list-files)
causes it to stop responding (no longer visible to "lsusb" etc.) until
turned off and on again (or unplugged from the USB port for a while).
The messages output by gphoto2 --list-files look like this:

canon_initialize()
Debug level: 1
canon: Canon PowerShot G1, Canon PowerShot S10
canon: Canon PowerShot G1, Canon PowerShot S20
canon: Canon PowerShot G1, Canon PowerShot G1
found 'Canon PowerShot G1' @
# a few seconds delay here...
Unknown camera! ()
Status: Camera unavailable
Status: Could not obtain directory listing
gPhoto2 reported the error 'Unspecified error'

and there are also some kernel messages:

usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
usbdevfs: USBDEVFS_BULK failed dev 10 ep 0x81 len 156 ret -110
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
usbdevfs: USBDEVFS_BULK failed dev 10 ep 0x81 len 96 ret -110

Similar results with kernel 2.2.19 (both UHCI drivers tested) and 2.4.4.
The USB controller is the good old PIIX4. Another machine (running
win98) can talk to the camera with no trouble.

I have searched the archives of this list, someone already had similar
troubles a few months ago, so whatever it is, it's not fixed yet...
Or perhaps Canon did something not 100% compatible with USB specs -
the manual suggests connecting directly to the PC (no USB hub), and not
using any other USB devices (except keyboard and mouse) at the same
time. That shouldn't matter, USB was supposed to be plug and play...

Thanks for any help. Please Cc: any replies to me (I'm not subscribed).

Marek
