What does 'dmesg' show? It doesn't look like you have syslogd
configured to put the kernel debug messages into the var/log/messages
file. Try adding:
kern.* -/var/log/kernel
to /etc/syslog.conf and restarting syslog to get the debug messages to
go to /var/log/kernel
