This is next to useless as a description.
Modems are normally driven by the acm driver (see recent 2.2 and 2.4 kernels).
However many USB modems are soft-modem (aka win-modem), which is not
supported.
We can tell more if you send the contents of /proc/bus/usb/devices with just
the modem plugged in.
