Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I'm running Linux-Athena, so I'm
forced to use the kernel that they are using, which is 2.2.17-14.
Otherwise I would use 2.4.  Since I'm stuck with 2.2.17... how could I
diagnose this problem?

If you're using a Red Hat kernel, please upgrade to the latest kernel
version (2.2.19-X from what I remember).  If not, I recommend upgrading
to 2.2.19 on your own.  It has much better USB support.
