I think that you have missed something critical about the little "dongle"
thing that came with your keyboard. It is not an electrical and protocol
adapter - it just does physical interface for the connector and signals the
keyboard to go into USB mode. If you look at some of the reference designs for
dual mode keyboards and mice(say, the Cypress web site), you will see how this
is done.

You will need a proper adapter. It doesn't matter what pins you short together
or open circuit, a PS/2 trackball is not a USB device.
