dear all,

        i tried to follow some leads about using the photosmart 318 (0x3f0, 0x6302;
"the/this camera" hereinafter) like a scsi drive.

1) upon reading the camera manual, i discovered that this camera has a setup
option that needs setting to the "i am a hard disk" mode.

2) i then proceeded as indicated way down and apparently crashed the whole
usb (so don't try this at home, kids). i tried dis/re-connecting single usb
devices and the hub, also powering down the camera. none of this brought any
reaction, not even the tweety-beeps i hear at boot time when the usb goes
active. at freeze time, usbview shows an "unknown device", but i can't get
any details because my keyboard and mouse are usb also...

3) this sequence is entirely reproducible.

4) i have a few questions about this log:
* i assume this camera is trying to be a scsi hard disk (sdb in my system).
if that is so, then who assigns the scsi id here? the scsi-id=0 is
jumper-assigned to my sda hard disk.

* is this IRQ 10 conflict report pertinent or coincidental?

* am i seeing interference between the mod_quickcam driver and usb-storage ?

5) assuming that usb sudden death is not part of the spec, there seems
something wrong here. even if the camera is somehow an "illegal" device or
not following protocol, it should not be allowed to take all of usb out of
operation, right? So i suppose more robustness is needed somewhere. Who
should I talk to?

6) i am willing to invest some trust in reiserfs and do more system crashing
to gather more raw data upon request (please be verbose in your instructions,
i am a newbie)

Thanks everybody for time and attention,

        mats

On my system (...)
  <<Suse 7.2, usb keyboard & mouse behind an unpowered hub, scanner & webcam
 behind a powered hub; sda is the boot disk (ca 50% full). the camera plugs
 into the unpowered hub>>

(...) this sequence of actions (...):
  camera off (but connected) -> press system reset button -> boot -> login
  -> start usbview (see no camera there) -> in terminal window go SU and
  modprobe usb-storage -> turn on camera -> this is when the "device connect
  1/1/7, assigned id=7" happens. when i saw the "device does not respond,
  giving up" line, i disconnceted the camera at the usb hub, waited some
  seconds and reconnected (11:52:28..32).
