I've received a few replies, public and private, and while I've responded
to one or two privately, thought I'd make a public reply as well.

I'll have to admit to feeling a bit emotional. The experience does not
put me off open source, but I do feel that the propaganda does not
match the reality.

I'd be happy if the stuff circulating about open source help included
something like "nevertheless, problems being what they are, it is
possible to strike a wall with open source help". Perhaps it does.
Perhaps I have not been looking.

I do not know who is responsible for the "helpful aura" that open source
tries to have about itself. The list cannot be held directly responsible
for it, I guess.

And, its been said that a lot of the propaganda about open source is
overstated. Well, fair enough.

My problem is more with inconsistency between the aura and the help
rather than the actual lack of help. Though, heck, a pointer to "here's
a better place to post your question" would have been useful.

I still feel open source still compares well to commercial software such
as microsoft. Such software has its problems, too. And open source
does much more.

When you do much more, and operate at a higher level, you open yourself up
to forces of both good and evil. You're still better off. But, you're
stupid to deny the evil that comes along with it.

I have done a little help. I sent an eprom off to Perth for someone to
boot a diskless netstation in Linux. They did not send it back, and
"fell off the planet" - you cannot contact them anymore. But that's
part of the experience, and I'd still help other people in similar
situations.

If I get this modem going, I'll make a post to the web site that's been
mentioned.

Cheers,
