Hello,
I experienced an ugly crash on my fresh Mandrake 8.1 install.
I had my system running for one day, then it ate its own (ext2)
filesystems to the point of no repair :-(
I suspect it has something to do with the USB (maybe specifically
in the SMP environment), possibly the USB printer - my last
actions were related to setting up and playing with a USB printer.
My hardware: Abit BP6 SMP (2 x Celeron 433 MHz), 512 MB RAM, 13
GB IBM disk on classical controller, 40 GB IBM disk on the HPT
366 controller, standard Intel USB on board (UHCI in 440BX),
"noname" USB hub, HP PSC 750 USB printer/scanner/copier connected
to the hub.
While the HPT 366 support is known to be not the stablest piece
of hw/sw under the sun, I had no problems with it using another
distribution, nor with W2k. The memory is 99.9% OK - just to be
sure I let the machine run the memtest86 for a quite long time.
I reinstalled the system and am investigating a bit (doing a sync
before each action :-)). Some datapoints known so far:
I am able to lockup the system doing "rmmod printer; rmmod
usb-uhci" - this is quite reproducible.
I get spurious lockups communicating with USB printer regardless
of using uhci or usb-uhci and regardless of using the Mandrake
distribution kernel or vanilla 2.4.10.
Tested removing usb-uhci with a uniprocessor kernel - locks the
system too. Alt-SysRq works.
Using uhci instead of usb-uhci gives slightly better results,
but is not 100% stable too.
The logs in the disastrous crash contained some Oopses not related
to USB - it looked like some memory corruption issue. I can't
post them, as I forgot to back them up before reinstalling :-(
I am no kernel guru, but I can and will try suggested patches
or help in tracking the problem, if somebody can give me a hint
where to start (just allow some delays, I mostly have time
for this stuff on weekends only).
Please, Cc: eventual replies to me, as I don't follow the list
regularly.
Thanks
