First off, I'm running Redhat7.1 (i386) on a P2-450 with kernel 2.4.2-2smp
(stock). I'm trying to get two different usb-serial converters to work. The
first one is boxed as "Inland Pro USB-Serial Converter" with a home url @
www.bencole.com. This device shows up in the kernel messages thus:

kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2, assigned device number 5
kernel: usb.c: USB device 5 (vend/prod 0x67b/0x2303) is not claimed by any
active driver.

however, the usb vendor device list shows this as:

067b Prolific Technology, Inc.
       0000 PL2301 USB-USB Bridge
       0001 PL2302 USB-USB Bridge
       2307 PL2307 USB-ATAPI4 Bridge
 >>>   2303  PL2303 Serial Port

a Prolific PL2303. I'm wondering why the kernel doesn't know this. Do I need a
more recent kernel? Until the kernel blesses it, I'm out of luck.

Second, I picked up a Belkin FSU103. Pricey, but it's listed on the USB-Linux
device compatability list as "fully functional". When I plug it in, it IS
recognized:

kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2, assigned device number 4
kernel: usbserial.c: Belkin F5U103 USB Serial Adapter converter detected
kernel: belkin_sa.c: bcdDevice: 0208, bfc: 0
kernel: usbserial.c: Belkin F5U103 USB Serial Adapter converter now attached
to ttyUSB0 (or usb/tts/0 for devfs)

however, I can only read from the device, not write. Before you ask, the
permissions are rw-rw-rw- so this is not the problem.

Suggestions? Advice? Ideally, I need a USB-Serial converter that will work on
both Linux (kernel 2.4) and Mac OS X (for app testing purposes). But for now,
I'll settle for just one that will work under Linux.

Thanks,

Stewart
