I'm trying to set up a device for reading credit cards on my Linux machine. I'm running RedHat 7.1, kernel 2.4.3012. The device is a SEMTEK MAGNETIC SWIPE READER, according to /proc/bus/usb/devices (see below for full dump), and according to the documentation it's supposed to send the numbers off the credit card just as if read from a keyboard. I'm certainly no USB expert, but I did manage to load the usbcore, uhci, input, hid, and keybdev modules, which I think are all necessary for a USB keyboard. There's good and bad news after that - the good is that I got a response, but the bad is that the response was "e44444444444444444444444444" ad infinitum with the 4s.
Has anyone seen anything similar? Are there settings I can tweak to get useful data instead of the multitude of 4s? Any help is greatly appreciated!
