I've got a machine using an "Atron" 40GB drive (purchased from Fry's Electronics) that works just fine. It's not fast, given the limits of USB 1.x, but it does work just fine.
You'll need to compile USB storage support _and_ SCSI disk support into your kernel, as USB storage devices show up as SCSI disks.
