I originally posted this to the linuxppc-user list and it was suggested I try
here.

I appear to be having a rather significant problem with my Belkin USB Serial
port converter.

If I open the port with something like minicom it works fine the first time
The second time I open the port the machine locks up.

I am trying to develop a small utility to communicate with an Icom Ham Radio
via the serial interface. I cannot get the ioctl calls correct to enable the
correct format/speed/handshaking yet, and trying keeps locking the
machine.

If I do
stty -F /dev/usb/tts/0
after doing
stty -F /dev/usb/tts/0 raw
It locks the machine.

I bought the Belkin interface specifically because it had drivers for both
linux and MacOS

The same interface has no problems in MacOS BTW.

Is the Belkin kernel code supported under PowerPC?
Has anyone got this device working reliably under any PowerPC linux?
Does this device (which is also available packaged for PCs) work under i386
linux

Below are the relevant driver load lines from /var/log/messages:
