Do you have an ifcfg-ethX file? On my system (Red Hat 7.2) it is /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 for interface 0. Is this the first ethernet adapter on the system?
Have you started the network (service network start or /etc/rc3.d/S10network)? Have you started the interface? (ifup ifcfg-eth0) Did you allow kudzu (if on Red Hat) to configure the interface? It would have created the file and configured your network start scripts correctly.
