Hello, I am having trouble getting a Nikon LS-40 (CoolScan IV ED) to operate properly. I am using VueScan (7.5.10) as there are currently no SANE drivers for the LS-40. Part way through a scan the software will hang, and the scanner will need to be power cycled in order to be used again. These messages will be sent to syslog when it happens:

Consult Documentation/usb/scanner.txt. Consult Documentation/usb/scanner.txt. It will repeat like that once a minute. Others have reported the same problem. See this thread in comp.periphs.scanners for more info: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&oe=ISO-8859-1&threadm=b476a0ed.0203181556.36a4f843%40posting.google.com&rnum=1&prev=/groups%3Fas_q%3Dlinux%2520ls40%26as_ugroup%3Dcomp.periphs.scanners%26as_scoring%3Dd%26hl%3Den It seems that everyone having this problem has a 440BX chipset/PIIX4 USB controller. My system is Debian Woody with a 2.4.18 kernel, on a dual Celeron 500 ABIT BP6 with 384 MB RAM. The problem is Linux specific. If I reboot into win2kpro it works with no problems. Below is the contents of /proc/bus/usb/devices when the scanner is connected. I have no other USB devices. # uname -a Linux spoon 2.4.18 #3 SMP Fri Mar 15 01:52:10 PST 2002 i686 unknown # cat /proc/bus/usb/devices T: Bus=01 Lev=00 Prnt=00 Port=00 Cnt=00 Dev#= 1 Spd=12 MxCh= 2 B: Alloc= 17/900 us ( 2%), #Int= 1, #Iso= 0 D: Ver= 1.00 Cls=09(hub ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 8 #Cfgs= 1 P: Vendor=0000 ProdID=0000 Rev= 0.00 S: Product=USB UHCI Root Hub S: SerialNumber=a000 C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=40 MxPwr= 0mA I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=09(hub ) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=hub E: Ad=81(I) Atr=03(Int.)
