I recently had a similar problem, but it was with a SmartMedia card in an 
Olympus D-1oo camera. But my error message was: 

mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device

So I'm not sure this fix would work for you, but it might be worth a try.

for an explanation of the fix, which involves changing one number in a driver 
source file. You don't have to re-compile the whole kernel, just the modules. 
So it wouldn't be difficult to change it back if it didn't work.
