I have a Microsoft USB Optical mouse (the only thing Microsoft does right),
and an HP DeskJet 812C printer that can be connected by USB or parallel. The
USB mouse works perfectly, but the USB connected printer refuses to
cooperate. Here's my configuration and output:
Red Hat 7.3 (it didn't work with 7.2 either, but I have no notes or logs from
then), running the unmodified, not recompiled kernel that comes with it.
[jmayorga@internal jmayorga]$ uname -a
Linux internal 2.4.18-3 #1 Thu Apr 18 07:32:41 EDT 2002 i686 unknown
In my boot scripts, whenever lpd starts, I get the following:
[root@internal root]# /etc/init.d/lpd start
Starting lpd: Warning - HPDeskJet812C: cannot open lp device '/dev/usb/lp0' -
No such device
[ OK ]
Notice the "[ OK ]". I don't know what's OK about it...
Hmm, let's try a...
[root@internal root]# ls -al /dev/usb/lp0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root lp 180, 0 Apr 11 07:25 /dev/usb/lp0
Looks OK, I think. Well, I'll take a peek at dmesg output:

OK, well, let's plug it into the same USB controller as the mouse, since the

Does anybody have any idea what the heck I'm doing wrong? I've tried google,
by the way, but all I find are people complaining that no USB devices work at
all, in particular, the mouse. I haven't found anything (yet) where the USB
mouse works, but not another USB device.
If anyone has any ideas...
Thanks,
John E. Mayorga
