In 2.5 kernels there's usb_make_path(), which returns a stable physical
bus ID that encodes the topology ... like "usb-05:01.3-2.4".  That groups
bus type, usb_bus.bus_name, and usb_dev.devname; devname encodes the
path through hubs from the root hub.

That can be used to solve "this camera points to X" problem ... :)

A number of folk have wanted that backported to the 2.4 series, which
might actually happen.  Regardless, I'd suggest that the 2.5 USB webcam
(and other drivers) expose that ID to applications.  Several of the
usb network drivers use this for the "ethtool" bus info ... which can
be used to solve the corresponding problem for network links.
