Yup, that's what I did, as it had always worked with previous
(<2.4.18) releases.  So I rebuilt .config from scratch using make
xconfig and also turned off the creation of usbmouse.o.

I still had a seemingly strange problem. Even without any USB drivers
loaded, the USB mouse still worked. Yet attempting to modprobe the
usb-uhci (or uhci) module caused an immediate system lockup.

I had switched laptops yesterday so I could send the original back for
repair, so I immediately suspected a different BIOS setting. Sure
enough, the T23 BIOS has a setting that allows boot from USB devices,
and it apparently also emulates a PS/2 mouse from a USB mouse if it's
present. When I turned off that BIOS setting, everything began to work
fine.  This should probably be noted somewhere, as should the need
to rebuild .config instead of copying it over from 2.4.18.
