Thanks a lot for the information you provided me. I tried to tune my kernel to 
get it closer to your config and also to have the USB Controller at IRQ 5 
(which I managed) and with I/O 0xb400 (which I didn't manage: always I/O 
0xd400): still the same problem. I even installed Windows 98 SE to be sure: 
it didn't perform better than linux and was less verbose.

Therefore I finally concluded that the USB ports on the motherboard were 
hardware-defective so I bought a USB PCI card for 40 CHF. Works like a charm 
with default configuration and usb-ohci.
