I've just got the JENREADER - Jonoptik smartmedia reader to work , and i noticed that 
in your modules list you have usb-uhci. I use usb-ohci, but i doubt that helps. The 
only time i got the not valid block thing was when the card was either v.old or very 
new, so i have a feeling the camera wrote a funny filesystem, then i'd get errors like:
