Are both running off the USB bus power? Possibly you are overloading the bus. 
Can you try using an external hub that is self-powered (ie has plug-pack) ?

My POTS modem won't run on my laptop without an external hub. Just not enough 
power. I'm not sure if that is problem you are seeing, or not. Does the modem 
still appear in /proc/bus/usb/devices when the lights go out?

Other than that, no ideas.
