Here is a far out shot in the dark.  Grab the latest Mandrake kernel and
install it.  Notes:
1) Do *NOT* upgrade the kernel.  INSTALL it.
2) You will have to use --nodeps since things are a bit different with
initscripts versions and things like that.
3) The usbdnet patch is already present in that kernel.

Give it a shot and see if it makes a difference.
