Why do you think the mct_u232 driver should be used?
Because my device is labeled MCT U232-P9

What does /proc/bus/usb/devices say with the device plugged in?
BAsically it reports it as a PL2303 device

What kernel version are you using?
2.4.7-10 (redhat 7.1)

And have you tried the pl2303 driver?
That's what's loaded by the kernel. Dmesg reports a segment violation when trying to cu(1) through /dev/usb/ttyUSB0

Thanks
