Dear Gabor, Thanks for writing. I HAVE SOLVED my problem by upgrading to SuSE 8.1 That is the good news; the bad news is that I have no clear understanding of where the cause of the error lay. I suspect that the newer HOTPLUG script is the hero, but it could be the 2.4.19 kernel.
The 'key' drive works like a charm, SuSE created a desktop entry for it and sees it as a scsi drive. When it is plugged in there is a system beep and you can then mount it. CAUTION: you shouild un-mount it before un-plugging it. Another caution: The desktop links seem to be static. When I added aditional 'real' scsi HDs they were assigned the /dev/sdx of the USB /dev/sdx used by the USB links Let me know f I can be of more assistance. .............
