There is an obvious difference here. Under mtools, you are using /dev/sdc1 
(the first partititon on /dev/sdc) and under mount you are using /dev/sdc 
(the whole device).

Try using /dev/sdc1 for the mount command.

For next time, you can often have good success with fdisk to inspect the media 
for a partition table.
