Hello, and thanks for reading this email.

I've got an HP DVD-200e which is showing up in devfs as a character device.
The questions I'm here to ask is: Does anybody have an idea as to why this
peripheral would show up as a character device, and what can I do to try to
fix this?

Thanks so much, in advance, for any information.

There are so many places I could be going wrong. First, this is an USB 2.0
device, but I'm connecting it to a USB 1.0 hub and am using the USB 1.0
modules. Am I incorrect in thinking that this, theoretically, *should* work?

I'm also using kernel 2.4.19, rather than a 2.5 kernel. This is for two
reasons: (1) my 2.5 kernel builds, but most of the modules claim to have
unresolved symbols, and (2) I'm using LVM, and am afraid to install the
LVM2.0 userspace tools for fear of irrevocably breaking my system. In any
case, 2.5.x isn't an option at the moment.

Here's some debugging information:

The device, in devfs:
crw-rw---- 1 root root 21, 0 Dec 31 1969
/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/generic

The /proc/bus/usb/devices entry for the drive:

Kernel log for attaching the device:

device number 25

Jan 13 07:38:52 [kernel] SerialNumber: 0000000000037956

(all of these were run with a data CD in the drive).

If there is any other information I can provide, please let me know.

Thanks again,

Sean
