I'm new to this list. I searched the FAQ, User's Guide and mail
archives and was unable to find anything related to the problem I'm
experiencing. I have a SanDisk SDDR-75 compact flash/smart media combo
external USB card reader. I finally got this device configured so that
I could read from it by following this suggestion in the FAQ

    echo >/proc/scsi/scsi "scsi add-single-device 0 0 0 1"

This approach seems to work for both Mandrake 9.0 and Redhat 8.0. My
current problem is that the card seems to get disconnected just about
every time I read a file from it, and this locks up the whole system. I
have to use hardware reset to recover. I actually have been able to
copy (using a terminal and doing "cp") a JPEG from this card to the hard
disk, and the image comes over uncorrupted. I can view it from the hard
disk and it looks fine. But if I try to view it directly from the card
from within a browser, the card is immediately disconnected (the light
goes out). The mouse sometimes can move for a short while, sometimes
the system locks up immediately. ctrl-alt-backspace doesn't work,
ctrl-alt-del doesn't work. I also saw it get disconnected (again, the
light for the card goes out - the power light stays on) when I was
copying from the terminal using cp. I already had a copy of the file
and so it asked me if I wanted to overwrite. I said no, and when I hit
enter it disconnected.

How do I go about figuring out why this is happening? My system is a
pretty old Tyan dual Pentium 233MMX, with SCSI and two PCI graphics
cards. The USB ports are on the motherboard, and everything seems to
work okay under Windows 2000 (multi-boot using System Commander.) I
appreciate any suggestions.
